Unveiling the World of Radar Detectors: An Exclusive Q&A with Vortex Radars
Introduction:
We're excited to announce that Vortex Radars, a leading authority in radar detectors, will join us as a special guest on our podcast scheduled for November 14th, 2023, at 7:30 pm EST. To provide you with a sneak peek into the fascinating world of radar detection, we've compiled a pre-podcast Q&A with Vortex Radars. Let's explore the intricacies and truths behind radar detectors in this exclusive interview.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background in the field of radar detectors?
My background is in electrical and computer engineering, and I was a professional photographer for many years. I also love driving and road trips and at one point I wanted to learn more about radar detectors to help me stay protected on the road. At the time there wasn’t a lot of good information available, and so I started testing for myself, sharing what I found with others as I learned. It turns out other people enjoy learning about this too, and so now I spend my time learning, testing, and sharing what I find online on my website, on YouTube, etc. I really enjoy figuring out tech and helping everyone understand how things work, especially going beyond all the typical marketing fluff you see online. I’m not affiliated with any brand, and I don’t care what detector people wind up choosing. There’s lots of great options. I just want them to find the best tool for them and to understand how to use it.
For those who may not be familiar, could you provide a brief explanation of what a radar detector is and how it works?
One of the most common ways that police do speed enforcement is by using radar guns. They transmit radio/radar waves out the front or rear of their vehicle, and that signal bounces off of other nearby vehicles and then back to the police officer where their radar gun can display the speed and direction of those vehicles. Fortunately for us, those radar waves keep traveling down the road, giving us a chance to pick up their radar transmissions well in advance of them getting close enough to pick up our reflections.
Are radar detectors legal everywhere? What are the regulations regarding their use in different areas?
In the US, they’re generally legal in most of the country, except for Washington DC and Virginia. There are some exceptions to this though, such as being banned throughout the US in commercial vehicles, on military bases, etc. In Canada, they’re banned in most provinces but legal in BC, AB, and SK. Internationally, things vary considerably so there is no one single or simple answer to this.
What are the essential features that consumers should look for when choosing a radar detector?
Long range detection and good false alert filtering are the two big ones, but there’s a lot of nuance within each of those. There’s also some additional features like photo radar detection, GPS, Bluetooth, and cloud connectivity to add further levels of protection.
What are some common misconceptions people have about radar detectors?
That radar detectors are police car detectors. Also that if they alert, it’s because there must be a police officer nearby. Radar detectors may alert to a variety of different sources of radar, not just police radar. This is where false alert filtering comes into play.
Are there any myths or misinformation about radar detectors that you would like to clarify?
So many things! For example... Radar detectors are helpful, but they don’t guarantee that you’re bulletproof against police radar. Radar detectors are helpful if police are running laser.
