What is a Subwoofer?

What is a Subwoofer?

We all love a great subwoofer, how it takes your breath away sometimes literally! But do we really know what a subwoofer is made of and what it has under the cool looking exterior?  Well let’s find out together all the parts of it!

A subwoofer is an essential component of an audio system, particularly for reproducing low-frequency sounds such as bass and sub-bass. It consists of several parts that work together to produce deep, powerful bass. In this blog, we will discuss the various parts of a subwoofer and their functions.

Cone or Diaphragm:

The cone or diaphragm is the most visible part of the subwoofer. It is typically made of lightweight materials such as paper, polypropylene, or aluminum. The cone or diaphragm moves back and forth to produce sound waves. When a current passes through the voice coil, it creates a magnetic field that moves the cone or diaphragm back and forth, producing sound waves.

Voice Coil:

The voice coil is a small, tightly wound coil of wire that is attached to the diaphragm. When a current passes through the voice coil, it creates a magnetic field that interacts with the permanent magnet, causing the diaphragm to move back and forth.

Magnet:

The magnet is a permanent magnet that creates a magnetic field that interacts with the voice coil. The strength and size of the magnet determine the power and sensitivity of the subwoofer.

Suspension:

The suspension system consists of the spider and the surround. The spider is a flexible material that holds the voice coil and allows it to move freely. The surround is a flexible ring that connects the cone or diaphragm to the frame of the subwoofer. It helps to control the movement of the cone or diaphragm.

Basket:

The basket is the outer part of the subwoofer where everything is housed in, mostly in some type of metal that can handle the pressure the sub is going to produce.

In conclusion, a subwoofer consists of several parts that work together to produce deep, powerful bass. The cone or diaphragm, voice coil, magnet, suspension system, enclosure, and amplifier are all crucial components of a subwoofer. Understanding the different parts of a subwoofer can help you choose the right subwoofer for your audio system and ensure that you get the best possible sound quality.
